New Rochelle, N.Y. – The Monroe College women's basketball team used selfless play to key a second-half surge in a 65-44 win over Community College of Rhode Island from New Rochelle on Sunday. Three different Mustangs players reached double-figures in scoring.
Monroe trailed early as the Knights jumped out to a 4-2 lead at the 7:23 mark. However, the next four minutes saw the Mustangs put a 12-0 run together to lead 14-4.
Camilla Kilinc scored five points in the run,
Gabrielle Jubinville also put in five and
Destini Green added two points. The Mustangs led 24-11 after the first quarter.
A three-pointer from Jubinville late in the second quarter gave Monroe its largest lead of the half, 22 points, when her basket made the score 44-22 with 1:16 left. The Mustangs led at the intermission, 46-25.
The largest lead of the game was 25 points, which came at 6:07 in the third when Green got a steal and found
Fatoumata Coulibaly for a layup. However, CCRI would get hot in the third and get the deficit down to 14 points, 52-38, at the end of the third quarter.
The final ten minutes saw Monroe push the lead back above 20. The key basket came at the 5:08 mark, courtesy of a Green trifecta. The Mustangs went on to win, 65-44.
In the victory, Jubinville Scored a game-high 25 points. She also grabbed nine rebounds. Dennis had 11 points (including a trio of three-pointers) before leaving with a foot injury. Klinic totaled 13 points. Coulibaly also chipped in with nine points and 11 rebounds. Green dished out a game-high 11 assists and grabbed a team-best four steals.
The Monroe College women's basketball team returns to action on Tuesday, February 9, when they face Orange County Community College in Middletown, New York. The start time is slated for 6:00 PM.
