New Rochelle, N.Y. – The Monroe College Women's Basketball team went 1-1 on a Maryland road trip over the weekend. They lost to Harford Community College, 82-62, but defeated Cecil College, 70-57.
Camilla Kilinc reached double figures in both games for the Mustangs.
Monroe held the lead against Harfordafter the first quarter, 23-20. The gap grew as large as eight points when a
Shania Johnson three-pointer made the score 23-15 with 0:38 remaining. The Owls rallied from there, earning five straight points.
In the second quarter, Monroe pushed the lead back to seven points, thanks to a Johnson layup inside of two minutes. Harford rallied late again, and trailed at the half, 38-35.
A
Cristina Soriano layup at the 7:40 mark in the third gave Monroe a three-point lead, but Harford took the lead for good shortly thereafter. The Owls closed out the quarter on a 12-1 run and led 55-46.
A Johnson layup early in the fourth brought the deficit down to single digits, but Harford went on to win 82-62. Johnson led the team with 23 points. Soriano added another double-double, with 17 points and 14 rebounds, while Kilinc scored a dozen points.
Monroe rallied on Saturday with a 70-57 win over Cecil College. Four Mustangs finished in double figures, led by Kilinc's 18-point effort. The sophomore shot 5-9 from the three-point line. Soriano added 15 points, while
Jada Banks finished with a dozen and
Aneisha Lyons added ten.
The Mustangs held a 14-point lead at the half and went on to win by 13. The largest lead of the game for Monroe was 19 points, courtesy of a Soriano layup at 6:17 in the third.
The Monroe College Women's Basketball team is now 7-3 on the year. They will play Harford Community College on Tuesday as part of a doubleheader with the men's team.
