New Rochelle, N.Y. – The Monroe College Junior Varsity Basketball team went 1-1 this weekend, falling to Our Saviour Lutheran, 74-71, and rebounding with a win over Westside High School, 78-76.
Damont Kearse Jr. totaled 80 points in the two games.

The Mustangs shot over 47% from the field against Our Saviour Lutheran. Kearse led the team with 39 points, followed by
Ismeill Etienne with 11. Monroe took a 12-point lead with 10:08 left to the first half when
Mahmadou Fofana made a free throw that brought the score to 25-13. Lutheran came back and cut the deficit to six points by halftime.

Monroe trailed by as many as ten points in the second half, but pulled close at the end. Â A three-pointer from Kearse in the closing seconds brought the Mustangs within three points at 74-71, but the game ended at that score.

The Mustangs rebounded on Sunday with a 78-76 win over Westside High School. Kearse bested his Friday output with 41 points, and
Andre Morgan added nine points on 3-of-6 shooting. The game was back and forth, with neither side gaining control. Eventually, Monroe pushed the lead to double digits and got it as big as 12 points on a couple of Kearse foul shots at 15:59.Â

Westside High School came back and took a lead with 4:14 left. Kearse quickly responded with another three-pointer, and
Nolen Irby sealed the game with a free throw with two seconds remaining. The Mustangs won, 78-76.

The Monroe College JV Basketball team is now 5-3 on the year. They will return to action on Saturday, December 17th, against Essex County College at 1:00 PM.
