New Rochelle, N.Y. – The Monroe College Women's Basketball team opened its 2016-17 season over the weekend with a pair of road wins against Roxbury Community College and University of Connecticut- Avery Point. The Mustangs won by scores of 70-57 and 80-60, respectively.
Three Monroe players reach double-figures in scoring in the victory over Roxbury on Friday. Sophomore
Shania Johnson made three of six three-pointers, ending the game with 15 points and six assists. Sophomore
Camilla Kilinc made six of seven shots and finished with 14 points. In her first action as a Mustang, freshman
Lisana Burnett scored a game-high 17 points.
Monroe shot over 60% from the floor and made six of nine three-pointers. The largest lead of the game came after a Burnett three-pointer early in the third quarter, giving the Mustangs a 26-point cushion.
The Mustangs followed up with a win on Saturday against UConn Avery Point, 80-60. Monroe defeated Avery Point last season as well. In Saturday's tilt, Johnson led all scorers with 26 points. Kilinc earned 19 points, and
Aneisha Lyons came off the bench to make four of five attempts and score a dozen points.
The Monroe College Women's Basketball team will return to action on Tuesday, November 8th, against Hostos Community College at 6:00 PM in the Bronx.
