Monroe Women’s Soccer Earns 1-1 Draw with ASA

Teams Will Meet for a Third Time on Friday to Determine Region XV Winner

New Rochelle, N.Y. – On Wednesday night, the Monroe College Women's Soccer team faced off against ASA College in a game meant to determine Region XV's first-place team. After playing to a scoreless draw earlier in the season, ASA and Monroe finished the game with a 1-1 tie. As a result of the two draws, both sides will meet at noon on Friday in a third contest to determine who will compete in the Regional Championship this weekend.

Monroe controlled play in the first half, with a pair of scoring chances from Gabrielle Pereira and Elysa Virella. All the shots were turned aside by the ASA keeper, and the game was scoreless at the half.

The Mustangs got on the board early in the second half. Pereira had the ball on the left side of the box. She played a ball into the box for Virella, who blasted a shot inside the right corner. Monroe led 1-0.

The Avengers tied the score with 10 minutes left, and the game went into overtime. Neither side scored in the extra sessions, and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

Gemma Pla, Brooke Smith, and Marta Alemany keyed a strong defensive effort that thwarted several ASA scoring chances. Alemany made three saves in the game. Smith also had a shot in the game.

The two top-ten teams are currently tied in the standings. As a result, they will play a third game on Friday, October 28th, at Aviator Field in Brooklyn to determine a winner. The game will begin at 1:00 PM.
