Brooklyn, N.Y. – Monroe College's Women's Soccer team finished out their season with an impressive 9-1-3 record after a tight game against ASA on Friday night left them behind, 1-0. Cold temperatures and blustery winds presented additional challenges as the Mustangs faced their Brooklyn-based rivals at home.
ASA got the only goal of the game in the eighth minute when a perfectly timed through ball found the far side of the net. ASA managed just two shots throughout the game, a testament to the Mustangs' strong play. The Monroe back line of
Gemma Pla,
Brooke Smith and
Marta Turmo thwarted any attack ASA could muster.
Marta Alemany chipped in with a save.
A free kick near the 25-minute mark gave Monroe a chance to score, but
Melissa Gonzalez's shot attempt was parried by the ASA keeper. The Avengers held on at 1-0.
In a game where weather conditions played a huge role in stifling any offense, Monroe managed to outshoot ASA, 8-3. The Mustangs controlled possession but were unable to find the back of the net.
The 2016 campaign is now concluded for the women's soccer team. They finished the year with a 9-1-3 record and are expected to secure another top-20 ranking when the final standings are released in a couple of weeks.
