Perrysburg, Ohio – The Monroe College volleyball team kept up its torrid start by improving to 9-0 overall after posting a 6-0 mark in the Owens Community College Tournament this past weekend in Perrysburg, Ohio. The Mustangs secured wins over Oakland Community College, Schoolcraft College, Macomb College, Lansing College, Wallace State College and South Suburban College.
Day two saw the Mustangs secure wins over Macomb Community College and Lansing Community College by identical 3-0 marks. The scores against Monarchs were 25-22, 25-18 and 27-25.
Set one with Macomb was back-and-forth early as the Mustangs led 3-1, before the Monarchs took an 8-5 lead. The turning point in the set came with Monroe down, 11-9. They grabbed a 15-11 lead on a 6-0 run. The points came from a pair of aces from
Karen Souza, a
Barbara Maximiano kill and three Macomb errors.

Set two had the Monarchs jumped out in front, 5-1. From there, Monroe used an 11-0 run to take a 12-5 lead. The 12 points came from eight Macomb errors, a kill and an ace from Souza, a kill from
Cristen Coryatt and a kill form Maximiano. The Mustangs went on to win the set 25-18 when Rojas set up Souza for the final kill.
Set three was even throughout as neither side could muster a big lead. Monroe had the largest lead of the set – five points – when a
Neysha Gonzalez serve was misplayed for an error and made the score 21-16. The Monarchs came back to even the score at 25-all. Monroe closed out the match with a
Gabriella Nobrega ace and a Macomb error.
Rojas once again led all competitors with 23 kills. Maximiano collected ten kills. The Mustangs improved to 6-0 on the season with the win.
In the second game of the day, Lansing fell to Monroe 25-17, 25-20 and 25-14. The Mustangs jumped out to a 5-0 lead on kills from
Ashley Ramos and Maximiano, a Lansing error and a block from
Taylor Robinson. It was back and forth from there and eventually the Stars tied the score at 14-14. From there, Monroe used a 10-1 run to take a 24-15 lead and take the set, 25-17. The run was keyed by a pair of aces and a kill from
Cristen Coryatt.
Set two saw Monroe fall behind, 7-4 before rallying. The team scored six straight points to turn a three point deficit into a 10-7 advantage. Ramos had a pair of assists in the run. Lansing fought back and got the score to 23-20, but an error and a kill from Robinson gave the Mustangs the second set.
The third set was a blowout for Monroe. They jumped out to a 6-1 lead, pushed it to 16-4 and went on to win it, 25-14. The team is now 7-0 on the year as Maximiano had 13 kills and Ramos had a dozen. Rojas recoded 33 assists and
Neysha Gonzalez had 15 digs.
