Last weekend, the Monroe Mustangs baseball team faced regional rivals ASA College in a five-game series and admittedly, in the second game on Friday, things weren't looking good for our boys in blue and gold. By the start of the seventh inning ASA led 7-2 but — as is typical of our Mustangs —they refused to feel dispirited and concede defeat. They rallied to score 10 runs in the 8th inning and ultimately, take the lead. Â
The following day, the Mustangs traveled to ASA for a double header and confidently took the first game (7-3). Justin Morales led the team with two runs and an RBI while, on the mound, Alex Vargas had 12 strikeouts and only allowed three runs in seven innings. The second game of the day saw the ASA Avengers (4-6) tie the series up to 2-2, but the Mustangs weren't done yet.Â
On Sunday evening, they returned to the field with great determination and subsequently secured an 8-3 victory to lead the series. The Mustangs first two runs occurred in the second inning, with six runs in the eighth. Johan Mojica enjoyed two runs; Endy Villalona had three RBI's and one run. Meanwhile, Edwin Gonzalez (1.72 ERA) pitched a complete game — finishing with eight strikeouts; allowing three runs and six hits.
Great job, Mustangs!
