New Rochelle, N.Y. - The Monroe College junior varsity basketball team got back in the win column on Sunday, with a 76-61 victory over Prestige Prep on Sunday in New Rochelle. The game was the final one in the 2015 Monroe College Invitational and helped the Mustangs earn a split after falling to Navy Prep on Saturday. Three Monroe players finshed in double-figures in scoring.
Monroe fell behind early in the first half. Eventually the team grabbed the lead when Azmi Abu-Ahmad buried a three-pointer at 15:55 that put the Mustangs up, 8-7 after trailing 8-2. The game would be tied at 13-all with 14:02 remaining. From there, Monroe took the lead for good in the first half when
Antoine Lewis found Abu-Ahmad for a layup on the fast break. The lead got as large as nine points, when
Justin Wilson's jumper put Monroe ahead, 33-24 with 4:23 left. They led at halftime, 37-34.
In the second half, the lead got into double-digits when a layup by Abu-Ahmad made the score 58-47 with 10:43. The largest lead of the game got to 15 points on the final points of the game.
In the win, Abu-Ahmad led team with 20 points.
Andrew Rodriguez was a perfect 6-6 from the field and finished with 14 points and a team-best three steals.
Merault Almonor totaled 11 points.
The Monroe College junior varsity team returns to action on Monday, November 30, when they host the Post University junior varsity team. The game is slated to begin at 6:00 PM.
