In the
New York Classic volleyball invitational they hosted, no sun shone brighter than the Monroe Mustangs women's volleyball team. They swept every one of their four matches 3-0, defeating Del Tech, NOVA, Potomac State, and Harford. Their dominance in the weekend invitational gives the #13-ranked Mustangs a 20-2 record. They're on a remarkable thirty-six set win streak that includes thirteen consecutive unblemished matches.
Despite their brilliance, their coach sees room for improvement.
"Even though we lead the nation in aces, we're still missing a lot of serves," said Coach
Nephtali Delgado Reyes, "and we had too many errors in kills. Our combinations were working well; our hitting combinations were very good. We need to play the same level in all three sets of every match, but we're not quite there yet."
After the weekend Coach Delgado was excited about the play of a number of his players, in particular freshman
Nelmarie Cruz who had 35 kills and a 58.3% hitting percentage in the four matches.
Against Del Tech
Indira Rojas had 16 assists and 22 against Harford.
Lee Ann Ocasio was 11/18 in attacks against NOVA and 10/19 against Harford.
"Teams enjoy playing in this invitational," said Coach Delgado Reyes. "Truthfully, they come to try to beat us since we are #13 in the nation. But we are on a pretty good winning streak so it's a challenge for everyone."
