Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | by Gary Axelbank

Five more wins for Monroe

Weekend in Maryland continues shutout streak

The #13-ranked Monroe Mustangs women's volleyball team is not only proving the old adage that winning is a habit, but they are certifying it as legend.  With five shutout wins in Maryland this weekend at the Tracey Leather Hagerstown Invitational Volleyball Tournament in Hagerstown, MD., Monroe's netters have now won nineteen matches in a row, including eighteen straight shutouts, for a total of fifty-four straight sets.  Monroe's season record is 25-2.  They haven't lost since August.

"These were very collective wins with all the players contributing," said Coach Neptali Delgado Reyes. "All the teams this weekend pushed us to play better and despite the wins, we know that we still have more space to improve."

Though coach Delgado Reyes singled out sophomore Lee Ann Ocasio for "playing great all weekend" and sophomore Edmarie Freytes for "continuing to be excellent on the serve line and running the offense well", it was freshman sensation Ashley Ramos who was named tournament MVP for her great job offensively and defensively.

"Actually, I have 16 MVP's.  Everybody contributed in these matches," he said.

The latest victims in this remarkable Mustang streak were CCRI, Frederick, Allegany, Genesee, and Hagerstown, who all went down 3-0 as Monroe won the tournament.

In all Ocasio had 48 kills in the five matches and a 53.3% hitting percentage.  Freytes had 80 assists in the five matches.  Ramos had 29 digs as part of her MVP performance.
