NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. — A second-half goal from freshman Amelia Kozina proved to be the difference as the Monroe University women's soccer team earned a 1-0 shutout victory over Felician University Wednesday afternoon at Skidelsky Field.
The Mustangs improved to 4-2-0 on the season with the victory, while Felician fell to 4-6-0. Monroe controlled the match from the opening whistle, finishing with an 11-2 advantage in shots and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless opening half, Monroe wasted little time finding the breakthrough.
Just 1:39 into the second half, Kozina collected her opportunity and found the back of the net at the 46:39 mark, recording her first goal of the season and giving the Mustangs a 1-0 advantage.
The Mustangs continued to pressure the Felician defense throughout the remainder of the contest. Monroe generated six second-half shots and five corner kicks, including three consecutive corner opportunities between the 54th and 56th minutes.
Felician's best opportunity to generate an equalizer never materialized as the Golden Falcons were held without a shot during the final 45 minutes.
Monroe continued to threaten offensively down the stretch. Nina Kalinowska forced a save in the 67th minute, while Kozina nearly added a second goal in the 83rd minute before Felician goalkeeper Isabella Riollano made the save.
The Mustangs' defense closed out the final minutes to secure the shutout and their fourth win of the campaign.
BETWEEN THE POSTS
Magdalena Syrek turned in a dominant performance in goal, playing all 90 minutes while recording her first shutout of the season.
Syrek was not required to make a save as Monroe's defensive unit limited Felician to just two shots, neither of which was on target.
Felician goalkeepers Zoe Pite and Isabella Riollano combined for four saves, with Pite making two stops in the opening 61 minutes and Riollano adding two saves over the final 29 minutes.
