Mustangs Fall to Southern New Hampshire, 3-1

Hooksett, NH - Monroe University women's soccer fell to Southern New Hampshire University 3-1 Friday afternoon at Mark A. Ouellette Stadium. The Mustangs generated 14 shots, including nine on goal, and increased their pressure throughout the second half, but a pair of early goals helped Southern New Hampshire build a lead Monroe was unable to overcome.

Southern New Hampshire opened the scoring in the sixth minute when Mollie Cahalane found the back of the net off an assist from Kate Wall to give the Penmen a 1-0 advantage. Monroe looked for an answer and Silberia Cuautencos put the Mustangs' first shot on goal in the 12th minute, but Isabel Hughes made the save. Southern New Hampshire doubled its advantage shortly after as Marley Jarvais scored off an assist from Emma Noheimer at 14:09 to make it 2-0.

The Mustangs continued searching for a breakthrough as the opening half progressed. Monroe earned its first corner in the 30th minute before Katarzyna Musialowska tested Hughes with a shot on goal at 31:37. Musialowska added another attempt late in the half, but Monroe entered the break trailing 2-0 despite finishing the opening 45 minutes even with Southern New Hampshire at five shots apiece.

Southern New Hampshire extended its lead less than five minutes into the second half when Noheimer scored at 49:55 off an assist from Cahalane to make it 3-0. Monroe responded almost immediately. Just 90 seconds later, Nicole Jendrzejczyk set up Nadia Sobel, who scored at 51:25 to put the Mustangs on the board and cut the deficit to 3-1.

The goal sparked an aggressive second half from Monroe as the Mustangs continued to create opportunities. Aleksandra Rzeszotek and Sobel both forced saves from Hughes in a span of less than two minutes before Musialowska put another attempt on target in the 68th minute. Cuautencos later tested Hughes again in the 80th minute and Sobel followed with another shot on goal in the 84th, but Monroe could not find the second goal it needed to close the gap.

Monroe outshot Southern New Hampshire 9-8 in the second half and finished the match with a 14-13 advantage in total shots. Nine of the Mustangs' attempts were on goal compared to eight for the Penmen. Sobel led Monroe with four shots, three on goal and the Mustangs' lone goal, while Cuautencos put all three of her attempts on target. Musialowska added three shots with two on goal.

Magdelina Syrek played all 90 minutes in goal for Monroe and recorded five saves, including three in the second half. The Mustangs finished with two corner kicks and seven fouls while Southern New Hampshire recorded two corners and eight fouls. Monroe moves to 0-2-1 following the setback.
