HOW IT HAPPENED
Monroe wasted little time creating pressure, earning a pair of corner kicks and putting several shots toward the Goldey-Beacom goal in the opening 20 minutes.
The Mustangs broke through in the 19th minute when Peterson Aquino scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season at the 18:39 mark, giving Monroe an early 1-0 advantage. Aquino also had a penalty kick opportunity earlier in the half that went wide.
Goldey-Beacom answered with two goals late in the opening half. Edualy Simon tied the match at 35:32, with Armaghaan Hasan and Sam Ball providing assists, before Ball converted a penalty kick at 39:31 to put the Lightning ahead 2-1 heading into halftime.
Monroe came out of the break determined to turn the match around.
The Mustangs needed just over nine minutes to find the equalizer. Sebastian Faudoa finished a feed from Simone Pitale at 54:13 to make it a 2-2 contest. Three minutes and 39 seconds later, Brunno Rhyan gave Monroe the lead for good with his first goal of the season.
Monroe continued to apply pressure, eventually extending its advantage when Kelvin Yengbie converted a penalty kick at 72:52 for his third goal of the season. The Mustangs capped the scoring in the 83rd minute when Yahya Sy headed home his first goal of the season off an assist from Matthew Murray-Smith, completing the four-goal second-half surge.
