New Rochelle, NY – The Monroe University women's soccer team earned a marquee victory over Miami Dade College on Thursday, securing a 2-1 victory off two goals from freshman striker
Wiktoria Mikrut.
The Mustangs wasted no time getting on the board as in the 9
th minute Mikrut bent in a left-footed free kick to put the team on the board for the first time this season. Then, in the 38
th minute, Mikrut broke away from the Sharks defense to achieve a brace. Freshman
Julia Migacz assisted on the goal.
Monroe entered the half up 2-0 after having played to a 0-0 draw at Miami Dade in its season opener. But the Sharks amped up the pressure in the second half to put Monroe's lead in jeopardy.
Miami Dade mustered ten shots in the second half, connecting on one in the 73
rd minute to make it 2-1. A late yellow card on freshman
Magdalena Syrek then set up the Sharks for a good shot at an equalizer, but Syrek came up with the save, her fourth of the day, to end the threat.
Mikrut ended her day with four total shots while the backline trio of sophomores
Melisa Guarin,
Sakurako Hara and
Valentina Carmona fortified the Mustang defense.
The Mustangs will next played in Rockville, MD, as they take on Montgomery College on Saturday, September 13, at 2:00 pm.
