New Rochelle, NY – The Monroe University men's soccer team earned its second marquee victory of the weekend on Sunday, defeating No. 11 Montgomery College, 3-1.
The freshmen trio of
Junyoung Park,
Mohamed Lamine Mansare and
Peterson Aquino all scored to propel the Mustangs to the upset victory on their home pitch. Park and Lamine Mansare joined sophomore
Carmelo Bello and freshman
Sebin Jung with three-plus shots on the day.
Freshman
Thomas Lancaster earned the win — his second of the season — while sophomore
Leonardo Martinelli backed up Lancaster's performance with a second half shutout of the Raptors.
The speedy Park began the day with a 17th minute goal, assisted by Bello. Montgomery provided the equalizer just seven minutes later, but a highlight goal set up by sophomore
Braxton Richards put the Mustangs in front for good.
Richards — who logged another 90 minute performance — attacked the Montgomery defense along the left side. Upon falling in the penalty box, Richards maintained control, got back to his feet and delivered a pass to Lamine Mansare for an electrifying goal to put Monroe up 2-1.
The second half was a mad dash to the finish as both sides ramped up the intensity. It wasn't until the 76th minute that Aquino put the threat to bed as the Brazil native roped a deep ball into the back of the net for the emphatic score.
Monroe is back to its winning ways after coming away from its road trip in Florida to begin the season with three losses. A massive test awaits in its next outing versus No. 1 Iowa Western Community College on Friday in Council Bluffs, IA.
