New Rochelle, NY – Goals from sophomores
Braxton Richards and
Reno Ishida propelled the Monroe University men's soccer team to a 2-1 marquee victory over Miami Dade College on Friday evening.
Richards put the Mustangs up 1-0 in the 58
th minute on a free kick before the Sharks provided the equalizer eight minutes later. Heading towards a draw, Ishida knocked in a score in the 76
th minute off an assist from Richards to catapult the Mustangs to a massive win.
Monroe controlled the tempo of the game in a scoreless first half, outshooting Miami Dade, 11-1. The tides began to shift slightly after the intermission, however, but Richards and Ishida aided in staving off a much more aggressive Sharks squad then seen in the opening 45 minutes.
The duo led the team with eight total shots — Richards with 5 and Ishida with 3 — but it was a cohesive effort across the board to secure a third straight win.
The backline trio of freshman
Yejun Ko, sophomore
Joao Victor De Araujo Ribeiro and Richards all logged 90 minutes in a fantastic effort. Sophomore
Leonardo Martinelli avenged his loss to Miami Dade earlier in the season with a second consecutive win in net.
The Mustangs are rolling and will have to topple another tough opponent in their next outing on Sunday at 2:00 pm against No. 11 Montgomery College.
