New Rochelle, NY – The Monroe University men's soccer team scored four unanswered goals to secure a 4-1 victory over Division III No. 4 Mohawk Valley Community College in its home opener on Saturday evening.
Sophomore
Abel Ador returned to the pitch with a goal and assist. Freshman
Narito Rio scored his first collegiate goal following Ador's goal in the first half, while sophomores
Braxton Richards and
Reno Ishida added to the scoring stretch.
For most of the night the Mustangs controlled the possession battle, but the Hawks broke through first in the 21st minute to put Monroe on its heels a bit. Enter the UTRGV transfer Ador, who sliced through the Mohawk Valley defense for a 34th minute equalizer.
Eight minutes later, Ador set up Rio in the penalty area to pull ahead 2-1 at the half.
In the 51st minute, Richards made it a two-goal lead after his long shot on goal ricocheted off a Mohawk Valley defender and into the back of the net. Ishida then put the finishing touches on a solid evening with a 90th minute goal.
Monroe garnered 18 shots, including nine on goal, compared to Mohawk Valley's five (four on goal). Sophomore
Leonardo Martinelli was rock solid in goal, recording his first victory of the young season.
The Mustangs have won two straight and will prepare for a Friday night showdown at Skidelsky Field against No. 20 Miami Dade College their next time out. They will be searching for revenge after falling to the Sharks, 2-0, on August 27.
