Rockford, IL – The Monroe University women's volleyball closed out the OWT Tournament with two ranked losses to No. 5 Parkland College, 3-1 (19-25, 25-21, 21-25, 6-25) and No. 17 Enterprise State Community College, 3-1 (25-23, 13-25, 10-25, 16-25), on Sunday.
The Mustangs hung around with Parkland for much of the contest, surpassing the Cobras in kills through the first three sets and even tying the match at one following a late 9-5 run to end the second set — sophomore
Flavia Pecora came out with the winning kill of the set.
Pecora led the Mustangs with 38.5% kill percentage, while sophomore
Jelena Peric paced the team with 11 kills in the match. Sophomore
Mileyshka Melendez was all over the floor, tallying 16 assists and 12 digs. Freshman
Chiara Lovadina added 13 assists to her weekend total.
In game two versus Enterprise State, Monroe's momentous first set victory — which ended on three consecutive kills after falling behind 23-22 — fell the wayside as they lost the remaining three sets to finish the OWT Tournament at 1-5 overall.
Melendez led the way with 19 assists, while sophomore
Emma Dedushaj collected 19 digs.
The Mustangs will now turn their attention to the Monroe University Invitational, which begins on Saturday, August 30. The College of Southern Maryland (11:00 am) and No. 14 Richard Bland College (5:00 pm) await the Mustangs upon their return to New Rochelle.
