Daytona Beach, FL – The No. 10 Monroe University men's soccer team dropped its Sunday evening matchup against No. 11 Daytona State College, 6-3.
A quiet first half that saw Monroe fall behind 1-0 led to a wild back-and-forth affair in the latter 45 minutes. In all, eight goals were scored amongst the two top-15 opponents, with the Mustangs pulling to within one on two occasions.
The Falcons made it 2-0 less than three minutes into the second half, but a foul in the box by Daytona State's goalkeeper segued into the first goal of the season for sophomore
Carmelo Bello.
Daytona State fired back just a mere 41 seconds later to push Monroe's deficit back to two goals. But no lead was safe from the goal-scoring frenzy in the early portions of the half as freshman
Peterson Aquino roped in a beautiful ball to make it 3-2 in favor of the Falcons. Freshman
Sebin Jung assisted on the goal.
Aquino — who led the way with four shots on goal on the night — and the Mustangs continued to force the issue on the home team. However, three more goals over the final 17 minutes of play by the Falcons was too much to overcome.
The Mustangs fired in 15 shots, with eight being on target. Bello paced the unit with five shots, including three on goal. Aquino added an extra goal in the 81
st minute to earn the first brace of the season for Monroe.
One final showdown against a ranked Florida team awaits the Mustangs on Wednesday, August 27. They will face the Sharks of No. 8 Miami Dade College at 7:00 pm before returning to the Northeast.
