Cocoa, FL – The No. 10 Monroe University men's soccer team fell in its season opener at No. 3 Eastern Florida State College on Thursday, 3-2. The Mustangs battled hard, but two second half goals by the Titans thwarted the season-opening win.
Monroe took a 2-1 lead into the half after sophomore
Abel Ador and freshman
Mohamed Lamine Mansare both scored off set pieces.
Following an early goal from the Titans, sophomore
Yotaro Furutani sent a ball into the penalty area that met Ador's head, signaling the first goal on the young season for the Mustangs. Seven minutes later, off a deflection from sophomore
Braxton Richards's set piece, Lamine Mansare scored to carry the momentum into the final 45 minutes of action.
The Mustangs were at a heavy disadvantage in the second half as it turned into a 10-on-11 match following two yellow cards by Richards. Still, Monroe remained vigilant and battled until the end.
Eastern Florida rattled in two goals past the Monroe defense to snatch the victory. Lamine Mansare led the way with two shots on goal, while seven other Mustangs recorded shots in the outing.
A tough top-10 matchup went the way of the opposition, but the Mustangs will have another chance at earning a ranked victory when they take on No. 11 Daytona State College on Sunday, August 24, at 7:00 pm in Daytona Beach, FL.
