Scranton, PA – The Monroe University softball team swept its doubleheader at Lackawanna College on Wednesday. Game one finished 7-5 in the Mustangs favor before they turned up the offensive energy with a 12-2 victory in game two over the Falcons.
The opening matchup of the doubleheader came down to a late rally from the Mustangs as they entered the sixth inning trailing 4-3. Enter sophomore
Nathalie Mongrain, who doubled in two runs to propel Monroe into a lead it would not relinquish.
Freshman
Reese Surratt supplied a much-needed insurance run a few batters later on an RBI single as Lackawanna wound up making it 6-5 in the next half inning.
The Mustangs shut down the Falcons in the seventh despite yielding a leadoff walk. Freshman
Zoey Zamora earned the win with her three innings in relief, inducing three straight groundouts to close out the ballgame.
Game two saw Monroe tack on the runs with 14 hits. Six players recorded multiple hits including sophomores Mongrain,
Maricela Colon and
Georgia Burr, who each drove in two runs.
Most of the scoring came in the sixth as Monroe pieced together a six-run inning. Freshman
Yarializ Maldonado drove in a run on a single to center before Mongrain drove in two of her own on a double. Colon then capped off the scoring with a two-RBI single to left field.
Leading 9-2, the Mustangs piled on three more runs in the seventh as freshmen
Lizbeth Zambrano and
Emily Hernandez picked up RBIs. That cushion led to a comfortable complete game by sophomore
Gabriella Diaz, who allowed just one earned run on four hits while striking out four.
The Mustangs pick up two crucial wins as the postseason approaches and they will take on Mercer County Community College in a doubleheader on Thursday. Game one is scheduled to begin at 3:00 pm.
