Sewell, NJ – The Monroe University baseball team dropped its doubleheader to Rowan College of Gloucester Country on Sunday, losing game one 9-1 before suffering a walk-off loss in a 1-0 game two defeat.
The offense wasn't clicking for Monroe against Division III's top team. The Mustangs accumulated just five hits in each leg of the doubleheader, but put up a ton of fight in game two before dropping the contest on a walk-off single.
Sophomore
Emmanuel Ramos was solid in the start, limiting the Roadrunners to just three hits across 4.2 innings of work. Ramos struck out five batters, but walked six in the outing. Freshman
Kyle Mandirola was handed the loss in relief.
Offensively, the Mustangs couldn't capitalize on their hits. Sophomore
Anthony Fernandez recorded a double in the loss, while freshmen
Jesus Nieves,
Nair Jamanika,
Gavin Marchese and
Dirso Melendez rounded out the hitters for Monroe.
A walk and double to lead off the seventh put Monroe in a tough situation. While Mandirola struck out the ensuing batter to make it one out with runners on second and third, the game-sealing single was ripped to left field, concluding the doubleheader.
In game one, sophomore
Ronald Almanzar provided the lone run of the day.
Monroe will take on Suffolk County Community College on Thursday, March 27, at 3:30 pm in its next outing.
