New Rochelle, NY – The No. 20 Monroe University men's soccer team advanced to the East District Tournament semi-finals on Saturday evening with a 2-1 quarterfinal victory over Harcum College.
Monroe continued what it has done all season — generating opportunities. The Mustangs had six shots in each half compared to Harcum's three on the entire game. Freshman
Sebin Jung and
Carmelo Bello led the way with three shots apiece.
Despite the influx in shots, Harcum struck first in the 25
th minute. But freshman
Mohamed Lamine Mansare answered with an equalizer in the 38
th minute to knot the score up at one at the half. Freshman
Rio Narito assisted on Lamine Mansare's goal.
An intense second half ensued with neither side being able to break through. Enter Jung — who had not scored prior to Monroe's regular season finale against Monroe Community College despite being one of the team's top attackers all season long.
Good things come to those who wait, as Jung delivered off an assist from freshman
Junyoung Park to send the Monroe faithful into a frenzy. His 82
nd minute goal was the final punch delivered in a dramatic game.
The Mustangs will take on No. 19 Monroe CC on Saturday, November 1 for a spot in the East District Tournament final. The game's start time is to be determined.
