No. 16 Mustangs Men’s Soccer Scores Most Goals Since 2013 in Home Victory over Massasoit

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., September 21, 2024 – The No. 16-ranked Monroe University Mustangs men's soccer team produced its highest scoring output since 2013 on Saturday, defeating Massasoit Community College, 18-0, at Skidelsky Field. The Mustangs even their record at 2-2 with the win, while the Warriors fall to 0-2.
 
Monroe's 18 goals on Saturday were the third most in a single game in program history. The Mustangs' twice surpassed this total back in 2013, both in wins over Globe Institute of Technology. In the Region 15 semifinals on Oct. 24, 2013, Monroe shut out Globe, 20-0, to set the program record. Less than a month prior, the Mustangs took down Globe, 19-1, on Sept. 30, 2013. Monroe's next highest scoring output came on Sept. 20, 2016, when they defeated SUNY Ulster, 17-0.
 
The Mustangs wasted no time getting things going on Saturday when Harumi Yunaiyama scored just 51 seconds into the game. The Mustangs went on to score nine more times in the opening half to take a 10-0 advantage into halftime. They scored twice in the 49th minute of the second half, and things kept rolling from there, with eight total goals hitting the back of the net in the second half for an 18-0 victory over Massasoit.
 
Braxton Richards had a fantastic evening, scoring a team-high four goals in the win. Each of Alejandro Silvestrini, Reno Ishida and Sebastian Sayers tallied two goals apiece on Saturday. Yunaiyama, Hayato Otaka, Joao Victor Figueiredo Novais De Assis, Jin Yamamoto, Yotaro Furutani, Ryogo Takayanagi, Abner Cubas and Max Charleston each picked up a goal in the game. Yamamoto added a team-high three assists to finish with five points on the day. Yunaiyama and Kelvin Yengbie had two assists apiece. Otaka, Taiga Matoba, Figueiredo Novais De Assis, Furutani, Max Baumgart, Cubas and Joao Lutz each had one assist.
 
Alvaro Ramos got the start for the Mustangs and needed just one save in the first half to keep the Warriors off the board and earn the win. Pedro De Oliveira Medeiros took over in the second half, but did not face a shot. Hugo Teixeira took the loss for Massasoit after yielding 18 goals with 13 saves.
 
The Mustangs totaled 50 shots in the game and put 31 of them on net, while Massasoit's lone shot attempt in the game was stopped. The Mustangs had all eight of the game's corner kicks.
 
The Mustangs are back on the road next weekend for a pair of matches in Maryland. The Mustangs take on Harford Community College on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 3 p.m. in Bel Air, Md. They then head over to Rockville, Md., on Sunday, Sept. 29, to take on No. 25 Montgomery College at 6 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE UNIVERSITY
The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 20 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe University marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
