NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., September 19, 2024 – An efficient performance led the Monroe University Mustangs women's volleyball team to a three-set sweep of Queensborough Community College Thursday evening at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The Mustangs improve to 9-3 overall with the win, while the Tigers fall to 3-2.
The Mustangs hit at an impressive .375 clip in Thursday's win, while holding their opponents to a .014 hitting percentage on the night. The Mustangs closed out the match with a dominant .500 hitting percentage in the final frame.
The Mustangs got off to a scorching hot start in the opening set, running out to an 11-1 advantage over the Tigers. A five-point run later in the frame had the Mustangs up on the Tigers, 23-9. Queensborough scored 3-of-4 late in the game, but the Mustangs wrapped it up with a 25-12 win to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Queensborough stayed close to the Mustangs in the second set, with Monroe holding a narrow 8-7 edge early on. That changed when the Mustangs went on an 8-2 run that put them up, 16-9. Monroe held a 21-13 lead before Queensborough scored 4-of-5, but Monroe kept its distance to pick up a 25-19 win and go up, 2-0.
Queensborough had the early jump in the third frame, going up, 8-5, on the Mustangs. A 9-7 lead for the visitors then quickly became a 13-9 advantage after Monroe scored six straight. A 5-1 run by the Mustangs then put them ahead, 20-13, looking to finish off the match. The teams traded points until they reached a 22-16 score, followed by the Mustangs scoring the final three points of the night for a 25-16 win to complete the sweep.
The Mustangs had some terrific individual performances in Thursday's home win.
Madison Smith threw down a team-high eight kills while hitting .636.
Flavia Pecora led the team with an incredibly efficient .857 clip with six kills on seven swings, adding six digs and a block as well.
Mileyshka Melendez dished out 22 assists while also registering six kills and five digs.
Natalia Rodriguez totaled five points with two blocks and two digs.
Jelena Peric led the team with 12 points on five kills and seven service aces.
Fabiana Lopez had four kills with an ace, a block and six digs.
The Mustangs will take a three-match winning streak into a Saturday tri-match at Raritan Valley Community College. Monroe's two-match afternoon on Sept. 21 will begin at 12 p.m. against host Raritan Valley, followed by a 2 p.m. match against Atlantic Cape Community College.

The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 20 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe University marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I).
