BALTIMORE, Md., March 7, 2024 – The Monroe College Mustangs men's basketball team wrapped up the regular season as best as they could, rolling to a 99-60 victory at Baltimore City Community College on Thursday. Monroe heads into the postseason with a 23-7 overall record, while Baltimore City drops to 12-15.
Thursday's matchup got off to a tough start for the Mustangs, as the Panthers were able to take a 24-19 advantage by the 12:53 mark. The Mustangs then made a big run, scoring 16-of-18 to take a 35-26 lead over the Panthers. Monroe then closed out the first half with another strong stretch, going from a 39-31 lead to a 57-31 edge over the final six minutes to hold a comfortable lead at halftime.
The Mustangs continued to hold a huge lead, with a 6-0 run giving them a 69-34 lead with 15:29 to play. After scoring nine straight right before the midway point of the second, the Mustangs extended their lead to 40 points. The Mustangs kept their distance throughout the remainder of Thursday's contest, wrapping up the night with a 99-60 win.
Ryan Williams Jr. led the Mustangs with 20 points on the evening, adding six rebounds and three steals.
Ziare Wells just missed a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds, dishing out four assists as well.
Jawarie Hamelin scored 13 points with a team-high seven assists, three steals and four boards.
Devere Palmer Jr. matched his 13 points.
Stefano Faloppa totaled 12 points with seven rebounds.
Hassan Washington added 10 points and six boards.
The Mustangs are now set for the 2024 NJCAA Div. I East District Championship, which will be hosted by Allegany College of Maryland in Cumberland, Md., from March 14-16. The Mustangs have earned the No. 2 seed in the tournament and a first-round bye. They will play in the tournament semifinals on Friday, March 15, at either 5:00 or 7:00 p.m. depending on the result of the first round.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 20 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
