Daytona Beach, FL – The No. 25 Monroe University men's basketball dropped its second consecutive game on Monday night, losing to No. 12 Daytona State College, 82-74.
The sophomore quartet of
Ryan Williams Jr. (16),
Hassan Washington (16),
Devere Palmer Jr. (15), and
Jordan Sanders (12) led the Mustangs in scoring. Turnovers plagued the team, however, as they doubled up on Daytona State, 16-to-8.
After two free throws from freshman
Eric Mejia with just under six minutes remaining in the first half, Monroe trailed 26-25. But the Falcons ended the half on a 9-5 run to take a 35-30 lead into the intermission.
Washington got the second half started with a potential momentum-starting dunk and the Mustangs eventually tied the game at 43 off a three-pointer by Sanders. The Sanders three capped off a 7-0 run prior to the 14-minute mark hitting.
The two sides traded leads for a large chunk of the half, with two Palmer Jr. free throws giving Monroe a 60-57 advantage with 7:13 remaining in the game. But the Falcons sucked all the momentum from that point on as they embarked on a 25-14 run to end the contest.
Monroe currently sits at 12-4 on the season and 1-2 during its Florida trip. It will close out the four-game slate in the Sunshine State with a matchup against Hillsborough Community College on Tuesday at 1:00 pm.
