Rochester, NY – The Monroe University women's soccer team is set to compete against No. 12 Monroe Community College in the East District Tournament semi-finals on Tuesday at 6:00 pm. The winner will advance to the East District Tournament final against the Region 20 winner.
The two sides have been pitted against one another this season already, with the Tribunes earning a 1-0 victory on Sunday, September 29, at Skidelsky Field. Freshman
Beatrice Vitaletti made ten saves in the contest, but Monroe Community College was able to find the back of the net out of the halftime intermission to take the road victory.
In 2024, Monroe has compiled a 9-3-1 record and currently riding a four-game win streak.
The trio of freshmen
Maiko Kikuchi and
Katherine Bean-Rosario, and sophomore
Katherine Neves lead the way for the Mustangs. Kikuchi (12 goals, 8 assists) and Bean-Rosario (13 goals, 4 assists) both have amassed 30 points on the season, while Neves (11 goals, 11 assists) leads the way with 33 points.
The Mustangs recently defeated Harcum College, 3-0, in the first round of the East District Tournament, with goals by freshmen
Maiko Kikuchi and
Katherine Bean-Rosario being the difference maker early on. Vitaletti forced the issue with a six save shutout.
In net, Vitaletti has logged nearly 1000 minutes across 13 games played. She has put together a 7-3-1 record while also stopping 49 shots in the process.
The Tribunes come into the matchup with a 10-1-1 record, including an undefeated 5-0-1 mark in Rochester. They are led do-it-all forward Sam Cipolla (20 goals, 8 assists) who has tallied a whopping 48 points in her debut collegiate season.
Last season, the Mustangs saw a very similar script to this season's East District Tournament. After prevailing over the Bears in the quarterfinals, they had to travel to Rochester to take on the Tribunes in semi-finals. The Mustangs, however, will be looking to avenge that loss from 2023.
