New Rochelle, NY – The Monroe University men's basketball team continued its win streak on Friday afternoon, defeating Richard Bland College, 81-52, behind a 28-point performance from freshman
Eric Mejia.
Mejia was one off his career-high set against Casper College in the beginning of the month, scoring his 28 points on eight made field goals. He went 8-for-10 from the charity stripe while also connecting on four three-pointers on the day.
Sophomore
Hassan Washington added a 17-11 double-double against the Statesmen.
Richard Bland jumped out in front early thanks to two quick threes and held a 22-13 lead near the midway point of the first half, but the Mustangs settled down on both ends to end the half on a 30-12 run. Mejia and Washington led the way, supplying 15 and eight points, respectively.
A signature highlight dunk from sophomore
Ryan Williams Jr. set the tone for a dominant second half that saw the Mustangs outscore the Statesmen, 38-18.
It was once again Mejia and Washington that paced the team in scoring. Washington logged 18 minutes in the half, adding to his double-double with nine points and seven rebounds, which included four offensive boards.
The Mustangs limited the Statesmen to just three made field goals across the final 11:16 of action as they buckled down defensively. At that point it was a 12 point margin, but the Mustangs closed the game on a 23-6 run to win comfortably.
Monroe extends its win streak to five games and will take part in the Jim Brown Memorial Classic, hosted by Hagerstown Community College next. The Mustangs have a rematch set with the Hawks next, which will take place on Saturday, November 30 at 3:00 pm.
