New Rochelle, NY – On an efficient 50% from the field, the Monroe University men's basketball team earned a 78-58 win over Quincy College to open the 2024-25 season on Friday night at the Monroe Athletic Complex.
Six Mustangs shot 50% or better from the field, with the top three scorers combining for a 66.7% mark. All three of sophomores
Devere Palmer Jr. (6-for-7),
Hassan Washington (6-for-9) and
Ryan Williams Jr. (6-for-11) scored in double figures in the victory over the Granite.
Palmer Jr. led the way with 18, while Washington and Williams Jr. scored 14 and 13, respectively.
The first half was tight, with the two squads entering the halfway point tied at 15. But a 12-2 run kickstarted by a lay-in from freshman
Qingfang Pang helped put the Mustangs in a comfortable, yet slim lead the remainder of the half.
Palmer Jr. paced the Mustangs with eight first half points, while Washington and freshman
Eric Mejia, who began his collegiate career a perfect 2-for-2 from the floor, each contributed seven first half points.
Three straight dunks to open the second half set the tone early for Monroe, leading by as much as 13 within two minutes of emerging from the intermission. A pivotal 13-3 run pushed the lead to 20 by the midway point of the half, signaling the end of the line for Quincy.
Williams Jr. put an emphatic end to the contest with two breakaway dunks to close it out.
Monroe begins the season 1-0 with a convincing victory over the Granite. It will next compete in the Battle for the Boot, a tournament hosted by the College of Southern Idaho, from November 7-9.
