Rochester, NY – Freshman Harumi Yunaiyama of the Monroe University men's soccer team delivered a 90th minute penalty kick to help snag a tough road victory over No. 18 Monroe Community College on Tuesday afternoon at John L. DiMarco Field.
A 2-0 lead for the Mustangs disappeared in the second half, with an 87th minute goal on a penalty kick from the Tribunes tying the match. But Monroe got a penalty kick of their own with 56 seconds remaining in the contest, and Yunaiyama cashed in on the opportunity.
It was a much-needed victory for the Mustangs after suffering a tough result against current No. 10 Harcum College this past Friday.
They came out with ferocity on the offensive end, with freshman Braxton Richards scoring nine minutes into the match. After assisting on the first goal from Richards, freshman Reno Ishida then added to his point total with a 43rd minute goal.
Sophomore Alejandro Silvestrini assisted on Ishida's score.
Monroe's 2-0 lead, however, diminished to a one-goal lead by the 54th minute. Then, the Tribune tied it with three minutes remaining, only until Yunaiyama came up clutch for the Mustangs, sending the visitors to 5-3 on year.
Eight of Monroe's ten shots were on goal in Tuesday's effort. Silvestrini led the way with two shots on goal.
The Mustangs will head to Frederick, MD next to take on Frederick Community College on Saturday, October 12, at 1:00 pm.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE UNIVERSITY
The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 20 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as the Monroe University marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I).
