Frederick, MD – Seven different players scored for the No. 20 Monroe University men's soccer team in its 9-0 rout of Frederick Community College on Saturday afternoon.
Freshmen Harumi Yunaiyama and Marcello Marcelino scored twice in the dominant affair.
The Mustangs started fast with a 7th minute goal via freshman Braxton Richards setting the tone of a long afternoon for the Cougars. Yunaiyama padded the lead three minutes later to put the home team in an early 2-0 hole.
The goals didn't stop there in the first half, as freshman Kelvin Yengbie, sophomore Taiga Matoba, Yunaiyama, and Marcelino each scored to finish off a stellar opening 45 minutes.
Leading 6-0, the Mustangs didn't stop there as Marcelino secured his brace 1:27 into the half.
Two more goals in the 69th minute, courtesy of freshman Ryogo Takayanagi and sophomore Aidan Tross, wrapped up the contest at 9-0 in favor of Monroe.
Seventeen of the 20 shots attempted by the Mustangs on Saturday were on target, with Marcelino going a perfect 4-for-4. Yunaiyama was 2-for-3 on the day.
In net, sophomore Alvaro Ramos earned an impressive clean sheet. Despite only making four saves on the day, Ramos withstood the Cougars' attempts to climb back into the contest.
Two more matches remain on the Mustangs' schedule, with a Top-20 matchup at No. 11 Dayton State College on Thursday, October 17, on deck. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
