Mustangs Women’s Volleyball Picks up Quick Sweep of Montgomery

ROCKVILLE, Md., September 22, 2023 – The Monroe College Mustangs women's volleyball team showed no signs of rust after nearly two weeks off, taking down Montgomery College in three sets Friday afternoon. The Mustangs improve to 8-8 overall with the win, while the Raptors drop to 7-4.
 
The Mustangs jumped out to a big lead almost immediately in Friday's opening set, going up by 11 points at 15-4. The Mustangs led by as many as 14 points before taking the final three rallies of the game to pick up a 25-9 win and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
 
It was the same story in the second stanza, as the Mustangs ran out to a 16-4 advantage over the Raptors. The lead peaked at 19 points when the Mustangs took a 24-5 edge late in the set. The Raptors got one more point before Monroe closed it out at 25-6 to go up by two sets.
 
The third frame was a bit closer to start, but the Mustangs still held a 9-5 lead earl on. The score was 12-8 before the Mustangs rattled off 9-of-10 to go up, 21-9. The Raptors then reached double digits for the first time in the match, but the Mustangs still wrapped things up with a 25-11 win for the three-set sweep.
 
Darlenys Olivo registered a team-high 11 kills and hit an incredible .733 in the win, adding two blocks and two digs as well. Gabriela Aimi Zuquelo was next with nine kills as well as seven digs, two aces and a block. Marilenny Lugo Polanco tallied five kills and hit .833 with three blocks in just two sets for Monroe. Martina Villani dished out 18 assists in the match, while Francesca Andreon followed right behind with 17. Alessia Gallo picked up a team-leading 14 digs to go with two aces.
 
The Mustangs get right back to it on Saturday, Sept. 23, with back-to-back matches in a tri-match at Northern Virginia Community College in Annandale, Va. The Mustangs open up against host Northern Virginia at 10 a.m., followed immediately after by an 11:30 match against Anne Arundel Community College.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 20 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
