NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., September 22, 2023 – The No. 1-ranked Monroe College Mustangs men's soccer team improved its unbeaten record to 7-0 on Friday, earning the team's sixth shutout of 2023 with a 3-0 victory over Mercer County Community College at Skidelsky Field. The Vikings drop to 4-5-2 overall.
Â
The Mustangs took the early lead in the 18th minute of the first half on Friday. After
Florentino Gomes Moreira Junior played it into the box to draw the back away, he set up
Tal Torgeman for a shot into the lower-right corner of the net to give the Mustangs a 1-0 edge.
Â
That score held until later in the second half on Friday. After a number of scoring attempts were thwarted by the Vikings, the Mustangs broke through again in the 75th minute off a corner kick by
Sunao Yamamoto. Yamamoto sent one in front of the goal from the far corner opposite the Mustangs' bench, finding
Ryosuke Tanaka for an impressive header into the right end of the net to double the lead at 2-0 for the Mustangs late in the match.
Â
The Mustangs got one more for good measure in the final seconds of the game. With just 31 seconds to go, Yamamoto was set up by
Felipe Jaime Arruda for one final goal, giving the Mustangs the 3-0 advantage with time about to expire.
Â
The Mustangs back line had another shutdown game for Monroe, holding the Vikings to zero shot attempts in the game.
Riku Yamasaki picked up the shutout victory in the process for Monroe.
Â
The Mustangs outshot the Vikings, 17-0, in the game, with a 7-0 shots on goal differential. Monroe also had all seven of the game's corner kicks.
Â
The Mustangs get back to work next Saturday, Sept. 30, when they host Harcum College in a rematch from this past Tuesday's 2-1 victory in Pennsylvania. Kickoff at Skidelsky Field is set for 7 p.m.
