Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 1 Monroe Plays to 1-1 Draw with No. 12 Daytona State in Florida Opener

MELBOURNE, Fla., October 5, 2023 – The No. 1-ranked Monroe College Mustangs men's soccer team saw its seven-game win streak to start the season come to an end on Thursday when the Mustangs played to a 1-1 draw with No. 12 Daytona State College at Eastern Florida State College's Orlando Health Stadium. The tie moves the Mustangs to 7-0-1 on the year, while the Falcons go to 7-2-2 overall.

After going most of the first half without a score, the Mustangs got on the board in the 35th minute of Thursday's contest. A long cross toward the left of the box found the head of Tal Torgeman, who redirected it up to Gun Ha Lee just outside the top-left corner of the box. He then fired to the lower left corner of the net, beating a diving keeper to put the Mustangs up, 1-0. An otherwise quiet half that saw the Mustangs outshoot the Falcons, 3-1, reached halftime with the same 1-0 score.

Early in the second half, the Falcons managed to tie the game up. An errant bounce on a cross back into Monroe's side of the field went right to Didier Jean Baptiste behind the defense, putting him one-on-one with the goalie and allowing him to score to knot things up at 1-1 in the 49th minute. There were not many chances by either team after that point, leading to the 1-1 stalemate after 90 minutes.

Monroe goalkeeper Alvaro Ramos made one stop, but allowed one goal in the draw. Eric Speed made two saves for Daytona State, but also yielded a score.

The back lines were the story in Thursday's contest, as the two nationally ranked teams totaled just 10 shot attempts in the game, with the Mustangs holding a slight 6-4 edge. Monroe put three of those shots on net, while the Falcons put two on goal.

The Mustangs will look to get back to their winning ways on Saturday, Oct. 7, when they take on No. 7 Eastern Florida State College at the same Orlando Health Stadium. Saturday evening's match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
