No. 7 Monroe Mustangs Women’s Soccer Keeps Rolling with Victory at D3 No. 9 Suffolk

SELDEN, N.Y., September 20, 2023 – An unblemished season continued for the No. 7-ranked Monroe College Mustangs women's soccer team on Wednesday, as the Mustangs defeated NJCAA Div. III No. 9 Suffolk County Community College by a score of 3-1 at Suffolk's Ammerman Campus soccer field. The Mustangs improve to 6-0 with the win, while the Sharks drop to 5-1 with their first loss of the season.

Sabrina Bastos Da Silva, Monroe's 2022 leading scorer, playing in just her second game of the season, netted her first goal of the year to open the scoring in Wednesday's contest. Samara Dullabh set up Bastos Da Silva in the 23rd minute to give the Mustangs a 1-0 edge midway through the first half. Neither team was able to pot another before the halftime break.

Monroe picked things back up in the 60th minute when Julia Meyer scored off an assist from Paula Campos to double the lead at 2-0. Just 47 seconds later, the Mustangs tallied another when Cayla Fletcher fed Dullabh for the Mustangs' third and final goal of the day, stretching the lead to 3-0. Just 32 seconds after that, Suffolk managed to get on the board with a goal from Melany Pagan-Rosario to make it a 3-1 score in the 62nd minute, but both teams were able to lock things down the rest of the way.

Natalie Dobler allowed her first goal of the season in net for the Mustangs on Wednesday, but still made three saves to improve to 6-0 on the year. Suffolk's Natalie Herron stopped 14 shots, but yielded three goals to take the loss.

The Mustangs totaled 31 shot attempts in the game, putting 18 of them on net, while allowing just seven total shots by the Sharks and four shots on goal. The game only had one corner kick, but it went to the Mustangs.

The Mustangs will put their undefeated record on the line with a number of challenging road contests coming up in the next 11 days. That stretch begins this Saturday, Sept. 23, when they visit No. 9 Monroe Community College up in Rochester, N.Y. The battle of the Monroes is set for a 12 p.m. kickoff. The Mustangs will then travel down to Florida next week for matchups with No. 5 Eastern Florida State College and No. 4 Daytona State College.
