Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

No. 11 Monroe Mustangs Falls in Nationally Ranked Clash at No. 4 Daytona State

DAYTONA, Fla., October 1, 2023 – An incredibly challenging trip to Florida for No. 11 Monroe College Mustangs women's soccer saw a tough conclusion on Sunday, as the Mustangs dropped a narrow 1-0 decision at No. 4 Daytona State College. The Mustangs fall to 6-2-1 overall with the loss, while the Falcons improve to 8-0.

Sunday's contest was stuck in a scoreless stalemate for much of the first half, with the Mustangs looking to be on the attack a bit more than their hosts. However, the tie was broken in the 38th minute when Daytona State's Akari Kishida netted one to put the Falcons up, 1-0.

The Mustangs had some chances in the second half. Sabrina Bastos da Silva put one on net early in the second frame, but it was stopped by Daytona keeper Emma Broch Laursen. Natali Maymon had a couple tries in the 71st and 74th minutes, but the Falcons' netminder once again made the saves.

Laursen earned the win for Daytona State with four saves on Sunday. Natalie Dobler made three stops for the Mustangs, but yielded the game's lone goal to take her second loss of the season.

The Mustangs outshot the Falcons in the game, 11-8, but shots on goal were even at four apiece. Each of Bastos da Silva and Maymon fired off three shots in the game to tie for the team lead.

The Mustangs get a couple weeks off before getting back to work on Saturday, Oct. 14, when they take a short trip down to Newton, N.J., to take on Sussex County Community College. That match is set to begin at 12 p.m.
