No. 3 Monroe Mustangs Men’s Soccer Shuts out Div. II No. 12 Mercer County

WEST WINDSOR TOWNSHIP, N.J., September 28, 2022 – The unbeaten streak continues for the newly No. 3-ranked Monroe College Mustangs men's soccer team, as they took down Div. II No. 12 Mercer County Community College with a 3-0 shutout victory on the road Wednesday afternoon. The Mustangs improve to 8-0-1 on the season, while the Vikings drop to 8-3-0.

Diego Batista put the Mustangs in an early lead with a ninth-minute score off an assist from Tony Yeboah, making it an early 1-0 lead for Monroe. Both teams locked down on defense for the rest of the half, as the Mustangs took a one-goal edge into the break.

It took until the 71st minute for another goal to be scored, but it was Batista now doing the assisting, as he set up Gabriel Silveira to double Monroe's lead with less than 20 minutes to play. In the 85th minute, the combo of Yeboah and Batista connected again, seeing Batista score his second of the afternoon to hit the eventual final score of 3-0.

Hyeongjun Choi made his first start between the pipes for the Mustangs, but the defense kept him clean, as he did not face a shot on goal in the game. He goes to 1-0 with his first shutout. Mercer County's Rodrigo Suarez Camacho allowed three goals with one save to take the loss.

Batista finished with five points with two goals and an assist, while Yeboah had a pair of assists in the win. Batista and Yeboah are now in a dead heat for the team lead in points, as they are knotted up with 23 points apiece through nine contests. Batista now has nine goals and five assists on the season, while Yeboah totals eight goals and seven assists. Silveira's goal in the game was his fifth of the year, tying him for third on the team.

The Mustangs tripled up the Vikings with a 12-4 advantage in total shots on Wednesday, including a 5-0 difference in shots on goal.

Monroe's originally scheduled matchup at Frederick Community College on Sunday, Oct. 2, has been postponed due to the expected inclement weather coming into the area. The Mustangs will play next on Friday, Oct. 7, when they visit Monroe Community College up in Rochester, N.Y. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
