No. 20 Monroe Mustangs Women’s Volleyball Drops Final Match in Idaho to No. 5 Salt Lake

TWIN FALLS, Idaho, September 10, 2022 – The No. 20-ranked Monroe College Mustangs women's volleyball team wrapped up its weekend at the Starr Corporation Invite at the College of Southern Idaho with a challenging three-set defeat at the hands of No. 5 Salt Lake Community College Saturday morning. The Mustangs head home with a 14-6 overall record on the season, while the Bruins improve to 13-2 on the year.
 
The Bruins took a big lead early in the first set, leading to an eventual 25-9 victory. Salt Lake separated itself from the Mustangs again in the second set with a 9-0 start, but Monroe fought back in the second stanza. A 17-9 deficit later in the set soon became a 21-19 difference with a big run by the Mustangs, with Monroe later trailing, 23-21, but the Bruins were able to close it out with a 25-21 win to go up, 2-0. Salt Lake then steadily pulled away from Monroe throughout the final frame, winning 25-19 for the win.
 
Manon Braunsteffer hit an incredibly efficient .833 in the match, finishing with five kills and two blocks. Yaliancis Flores threw down eight kills to lead the team, adding nine digs, two aces and a block. Francesca Andreon handed out 15 assists. Laura Paniagua picked up eight digs, while Alessia Gallo totaled seven. Maja Diop contributed two blocks and five assists in the match.
 
The Mustangs are back on the road next weekend, this time with a trip down to South Carolina for the Spartanburg Methodist College Classic in Spartanburg, S.C. Monroe beings play on Friday, Sept. 16, with a 5 p.m. match against USC Sumter. They will then take on Spartanburg Methodist and USC Lancaster back-to-back on Saturday.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 11 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
