Monroe Mustangs Women’s Volleyball Wins Quick Match over St. Joseph’s-L.I.

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., August 31, 2022 – On a night commemorating Head Coach Nephtali Delgado Reyes for his 300th career victory that was secured this past Saturday evening, the Monroe College Mustangs women's volleyball team picked up a quick three-set victory over St. Joseph's College-L.I. Wednesday evening at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The Mustangs improve to 9-2 overall with the win.
 
The Mustangs got off to a terrific start in Wednesday's match, taking an 8-1 lead on the Golden Eagles early in the opening set. The lead reached 10 when the Mustangs went up, 14-4, and continued to grow from there. The Golden Eagles added a few more points down the stretch, but the Mustangs went on to win big, 25-8.
 
The second stanza went even better for the Mustangs, who got off to a 10-1 start this time. After two straight by St. Joseph's, the Mustangs went on to score the next 10 for a commanding 20-3 advantage. The teams traded points down the stretch to see Monroe win its second game of the night, 25-7.
 
The action was much closer to kick off the third frame, as St. Joseph's managed to take a 7-4 lead on the Mustangs. The Mustangs turned the tables with five straight points, putting the home team back up, 9-7, and made it 9-of-10 to take a 13-8 edge and force the Golden Eagles to use a timeout. Momentum remained with the Mustangs, who soon led the Golden Eagles by eight at 18-10. The Golden Eagles got as close as seven points down the stretch, but the Mustangs were never in trouble, winning 25-15, to close out the match.
 
The Mustangs hit .392 across three sets Wednesday evening, while holding the Golden Eagles to a -.049 clip. Gabriela Aimi Zuquelo and Manon Braunsteffer matched for the team lead with seven kills, while Aimi Zuquelo added three aces and 10 digs. Yaliancis Flores registered six kills, while Leanisse Solano added five. Solano hit .714 in the match, Flores swung at a .667 rate, and Braunsteffer hit at a .600 clip. Francesca Andreon dished out 18 assists, while Maja Diop handed out 13. Laura Paniagua led the team with 15 digs.
 
The Mustangs will host the Monroe College Volleyball Invitational this weekend, welcoming Montgomery College, Fayetteville Technical Community College, Fashion Institute of Technology and Harford Community College to the MAC for a two-day, 10-match tournament beginning on Saturday, Sept. 3. The Mustangs play twice on Saturday, first at 9 a.m. against Montgomery, and then in the final match of the day at 5 p.m. against Fashion Institute of Technology.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 11 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
