LANCASTER, S.C., August 28, 2022 – It proved to be a prosperous weekend in South Carolina for the Monroe College Mustangs men's soccer team, as the Mustangs rolled to a 7-0 shutout victory at USC Lancaster on Sunday. The Mustangs improve to 3-0 on the season with the win, while the Lancers drop to 1-2.
The seven goals for Monroe made it 13 total across two contests in South Carolina. The Mustangs defeated USC Sumter, 6-0, on Friday. The Mustangs allowed just four total shot attempts in the game, while firing off 29 themselves, including a 16-2 edge in shots on goal. Monroe also had all six of the game's corner kicks in another dominant effort.
Bruno Rosa got the scoring started with his second goal of the season, putting Monroe up by a goal in the fourth minute of the game. Later in the half,
Hugo Jinkinsons potted his first of the season off an assist from
Nils Friebe to put the Mustangs up, 2-0, which held through halftime.
Monroe scored three quick goals in the second half.
Tony Yeboah picked up his third of the short season off a cross from Rosa to make it a three-goal game, and then
Diego Batista added his second off an assist from Yeboah moments later to go up by four.
Gabriel Silveira then scored his first goal for Monroe shortly after to put Monroe up by five. Friebe followed in the 71st minute with his first of the year, set up by
Shotaro Kino, and then
Igor Souza scored his third of the season off another assist from Friebe in the 85th minute to cap off the day with Monroe's seventh netter.
Maurice Koenig picked up his third win in net for Monroe, making two stops in 58:28 between the pipes.
Justin Griffith saw his first action of the year and helped close out the shutout. Beckham Bommershine shouldered the loss for the Lancers.
Friebe had a four-point day for Monroe with a goal and two assists in the win. Rosa and Yeboah had a goal and an assist apiece for matching three-point days. Batista, Souza, Silveira and Jinkinsons all scored as well to total seven different goal-scorers in the victory.
The Mustangs get a few days of practice and rest before heading back on the road next weekend for the Montgomery College Tournament in Rockville, Md. They will open a two-game weekend on Friday, Sept. 2, against host Montgomery College. That game is set to begin at 7:15 p.m.

The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 11 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
