ROCKVILLE, Md., September 2, 2022 – A hot start to the season continued for the No. 11-ranked Monroe College Mustangs men's soccer team, as the Mustangs dropped eight goals on No. 18 Montgomery College in an 8-1 victory Friday evening on the first day of the Tom Bichey Memorial Tournament, hosted by Montgomery. Monroe improves to 4-0 on the early season with the win, while the Raptors drop to 1-1.
The Mustangs were efficient in the win, putting 10-of-12 shots on goal, while scoring on eight of those attempts. Montgomery attempted 10 total shots in the game, putting just four on goal and scoring once.
As they've done in in the past two games, the Mustangs got on the board very early in Friday's matchup.
Diego Batista drew a foul in the box, connecting on a penalty-kick opportunity just 1:31 into the game to give Monroe an early lead. Just four minutes later,
Tony Yeboah scored off an assist from
Cade Erickson to double the lead. Montgomery got one back when Sota Matsuo scored on a free kick just outside the box to cut Monroe's lead in half, but
Bruno Rosa drew a penalty kick of his own for the Mustangs in the 23rd minute, connecting on the opportunity to make it a 3-1 game.
The scoring kept coming for the Mustangs in the 28th minute.
Tony Yeboah came streaking down the right side of the field, then found
Gabriel Silveira for an easy redirection into the net to make it a 4-1 game. In the 32nd minute,
Diogo Bastos sent a corner kick right to the front of the net, finding the head of
Hugo Jinkinson for the score, pushing the lead to 5-1. Another corner kick from Bastos in the 40th minute found Silveira near the left post, where he tapped it just over the line for the score, leaving the Mustangs up, 6-1, going into halftime.
The scoring picked up again in the 68th minute for the Mustangs. With the ball bouncing all around the box, Silveira managed to squeeze a pass in to
Igor Souza, who just managed to roll the ball past defenders and the keeper for the score, making it a 7-1 match. In the final minute of the game,
Yuto Komine was able to lead
Paul Ludwig into the box, where he beat the keeper one-on-one for Monroe's final goal of the game.
Maurice Koenig made three saves and allowed the one score to earn his fourth win of the season on Friday. Marvin Cheguen Mende took the loss for the Raptors after yielding six scores with one save in the first half.
The Mustangs had seven different goal scorers in the game, with Silveira leading the team with two in the win, finishing with five points after adding an assist. Yeboah led the team with three shots in the game and finished with three points on a goal and an assist. Bastos handed out two assists.
The Mustangs will look to keep the good times rolling on Sunday, Sept. 4, when they wrap up their trip to Maryland with a matchup against NJCAA Div. II No. 2 CCBC Essex. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
