Dominant Effort on Both Ends Lifts Monroe Mustangs Men’s Soccer to Shutout Victory over USC Sumter

LANCASTER, S.C., August 26, 2022 – The Monroe College Mustangs men's soccer team allowed just a single shot attempt while having a big day in the offensive third en route to a 6-0 victory over USC Sumter Friday evening at USC Lancaster. The Mustangs improve to 2-0 on the year with the win, while the Fire Ants fall to 2-1.
 
The Mustangs got off to a quick start against the Fire Ants on Friday. In the sixth minute, Diego Batista netted the game's opening goal to put Monroe ahead, 1-0. A little later in the 20th minute, Felipe Jaime Arruda set up Tony Yeboah for another Mustang goal, putting Monroe up by two midway through the opening half. The Mustangs took that 2-0 lead into the halftime break.
 
Monroe turned up the heat in the final 45 minutes on Friday. In the 63rd minute, Godwin Partey scored off an assist from Yeboah to make it a three-goal game. Midway through the half, Adam Yousfi set up Igor Souza for a goal in the 77th minute to put Monroe ahead by four. Souza connected once again off another feed from Yousfi just three minutes later to make it a 5-0 lead. With just 57 seconds remaining, Paul Ludwig redirected a cross from Shotaro Kino for Monroe's final goal of the day.
 
Maurice Koenig improves to 2-0 on the year in goal and is credited with his first shutout of the season in the win. Earl Dyck took the loss for USC Sumter after yielding two goals in the first half. Tim Baerwalde came on in the second half and allowed four Mustang goals.
 
Souza scored twice to lead Monroe in the win. Yeboah scored his second of the year and added an assist for his second three-point day in as many games. Yousfi provided two assists. Batista netted the game-winning goal with Monroe's first of the day. Ludwig and Partey both scored in the second half.
 
The Mustangs outshot the Fire Ants, 17-1, with a 9-0 advantage in shots on goal in the win. The Mustangs also earned six corner kicks, while the Fire Ants had just one.
 
The Mustangs wrap up their trip to South Carolina on Sunday, Aug. 28, when they take on their hosts, USC Lancaster. The match is set to begin at 11 a.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 11 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
