DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., August 25, 2022 – After a challenging first day of the Florida trip for the Monroe College Mustangs women's volleyball team, the Mustangs bounced back in style, rolling to a three-set victory over Coastal Alabama Community College at Daytona State College on Thursday. The Mustangs improve to 5-2 on the year with the win, while the Sun Chiefs drop to 1-2.
The Mustangs stormed out to an 8-2 advantage early in the opening set, maintaining that lead midway through with a 13-7 score. Monroe then went on a 6-1 run for a dominant 19-8 edge, before closing out the game with another 6-1 stretch to pick up a 25-12 win and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
The second stanza got off to a closer start, but the Mustangs managed to take control with an 11-7 lead. After the lead was cut to 11-9, the Mustangs tallied nine straight points, including three aces by
Laura Paniagua, to go up by 11. The Mustangs yielded just two points the rest of the way, earning a 25-11 win to go up, 2-0.
The Mustangs went on a huge run in the third set to earn a dominant 16-point victory. After the Sun Chiefs kept it close at 9-7, the Mustangs scored seven straight to go up, 16-7. Coastal Alabama got one back, but the Mustangs made it another three before the Sun Chiefs got back on the board. Monroe then closed out the set with six straight points, making it a 16-2 run down the stretch for a 25-9 win to wrap up the match.
Vanja Stefanovic hit .400 en route to a team-high 10 kills in the win.
Yaliancis Flores added eight kills to go with eight digs and three aces.
Francesca Andreon dished out 25 assists, adding eight digs and two aces. Paniagua led the team with 10 digs and five service aces.
Manon Braunsteffer had three total blocks, while Andreon and
Rebecca Jackson each had two apiece.
The week in Florida continues for the Mustangs at the Campus USA Credit Union/Redpoint Apartments Santa Fe Classic, hosted by Santa Fe College in Gainesville, Fla. Monroe begins play at the tournament on Friday, Aug. 26, with a 4:30 p.m. match against Pensacola State College.
