HAVERFORD, Pa., August 21, 2022 – The 2022 season got off to a stellar start for the Monroe College Mustangs men's soccer team, as a second-half winner was the difference in a 3-2 victory for the Mustangs over Harcum College Sunday evening at Haverford Reserve. The Mustangs open at 1-0, while the Bears fall to 0-1.
Early in the contest,
Tony Yeboah broke the scoreless tie off a feed from
Bruno Rosa, to put the Mustangs up, 1-0. Shortly after, Rosa got one of his own to make it a 2-0 lead for the Mustangs. However, the Bears fought back, scoring twice later in the first half to knot things up at 2-2 heading into halftime.
Midway through the second half,
Cade Erickson broke the tie with his first goal on a tap-in off an assist from Yeboah to make it a 3-2 game. The Mustangs' defense locked down the Bears throughout the second half, keeping them off the board to hold on for the one-score victory.
Maurice Koenig got off to a 1-0 start with the win in net in Sunday's opener. Yeboah and Rosa each registered three points with a goal and an assist apiece. Erickson is credited with his first game-winning goal as a Mustang.
With a win in-hand, the Mustangs will come home for a few days before taking a trip down to Lancaster, S.C. for a pair of contests this coming weekend. They will first take on USC Sumter on Friday, Aug. 26, at 5 p.m. at USC Lancaster. The Mustangs will then close out the weekend on Sunday, Aug. 28, with an 11 a.m. match against host USC Lancaster.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 11 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
