NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., April 28, 2022 –
Roman Dorosh turned in the best game of his Mustang career on Thursday, twirling 15 strikeouts across seven shutout innings to help the Monroe College Mustangs baseball team to a 9-1 run-rule victory over County College of Morris at Dick Caswell Field. The Mustangs improve to 20-26 overall with the win, while the Titans drop to 19-14.
Â
Dorosh's 15 strikeouts on Thursday surpassed his previous career-high of 10 from just 12 days ago against Suffolk County Community College. He allowed no runs just two hits without a walk over his seven innings to earn his third victory of the season.
Â
After two scoreless frames, the Mustangs jumped into the lead in the bottom of the third.
Kristopher Salinas led off with a single to right, and was then sacrificed to second by
Miguel Toribio.
Luis Villalba took advantage with an RBI single to left, scoring Salinas to make it a 1-0 game.
Andres Castro followed with a double to plate Villalba and push the lead to two. After Castro stole third,
Salix Felix hit a grounder to short that was misplayed, bringing Castro home to leave Monroe up by three.
Â
The scoring halted for another two innings before the Mustangs picked things up again in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Felix launched a long fly ball over the wall in right-center for a solo homer, making it a 4-0 lead for Monroe. Two batters later,
Nathaniel Alvarez hit a long fly ball down the right-field line that dropped in for a triple. A throw to the infield went way off the mark, allowing Alvarez to come home for a 5-0 Mustang lead.
Â
With one out in the seventh, Toribio dropped a perfect bunt down the third-base line for a single, but an errant throw by the third baseman allowed him to move up to second. With two outs, Castro hit a single to left to bring Toribio home, bringing the score to 6-0.
Â
The Titans ended the shutout in the top of the eighth when CJ Tomalavage homered over the fence in left-center, cutting the Mustangs' lead to 6-1.
Â
The Mustangs put their stamp on the game in the bottom of the eighth. Alvarez hit a one-out single, and then
Angel De La Cruz walked.
Pedro Crespo then singled into left, bringing in Alvarez to make it a 7-1 game. After a single by Salinas loaded the bases, Toribio drew a walk to put Monroe ahead by seven and just a run away from ending the game. With two outs, a balk brought Crespo home, ending the game at 9-1.
Â
Castro went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run in the win. Alvarez hit a triple in a 2-for-4 outing, scoring twice. Felix finished 1-for-4 with a solo homer, his seventh of the season and 21st across his Mustang career, totaling two RBIs and a run in the game. Crespo went 2-for-2 after pinch hitting later in the game, knocking in a run and scoring another himself. Salinas went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Villalba knocked in a run and scored once as well in a 2-for-5 outing. Toribio finished 1-for-5 with an RBI and a run. De La Cruz scored once in a 1-for-3 effort.
Â
Monroe gets Friday off before going head-to-head with ASA College (NYC) twice on Saturday, April 30, at Dick Caswell Field. Game 1 of the doubleheader is set for 12 p.m.
