Council Drops 31 in Victory over Allegany, No. 14 Monroe Mustangs Men’s Basketball Remains Unbeaten

HAGERSTOWN, Md., November 28, 2022 – Melvin Council Jr. netted a season-high 31 points to lift the No. 14-ranked Monroe College Mustangs men's basketball team to an 83-71 victory over Allegany College of Maryland on Sunday in the Mustangs' final matchup at the Jim Brown Memorial Classic, hosted by Hagerstown Community College. The Mustangs improve to 9-0 on the season, while the Trojans fall to 7-4.
 
Council totaled 31 points on 14-of-21 shooting in the win to set a new season high. It's the seventh 30-plus-point performance of his career at Monroe, having eclipsed 30 points six times in 2021-22, including a pair of 35-point games. Council also tallied five rebounds and five assists in the win.
 
Emmanuel Ogbole stayed hot in the win as well with his fifth straight double-double. He produced 15 points and a team-high 13 rebounds in the game. Hamdel Mohammed was next for the Mustangs with nine points. Tyje Kelton totaled eight points and a team-high seven assists in the game.
 
The Mustangs are set for a challenging trip down to the Florida Panhandle this coming weekend, when they compete at the Northwest Florida State College Classic in Niceville, Fla. The first of three straight games takes place on Friday, Dec. 2, against Pensacola State College. Monroe takes on host and currently No. 10-ranked Northwest Florida on Saturday, Dec. 3. The Mustangs then wrap up the weekend against currently No. 4-ranked Chipola College on Sunday, Dec. 4.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 11 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
