Monroe Mustangs Women’s Volleyball Defeats Lake Sumter to Cap Off Flawless Weekend in Florida

ORANGE PARK, Fla., October 23, 2022 – The Monroe College Mustangs women's volleyball team capped off an unblemished weekend on Sunday with a three-set victory over Lake Sumter State College in Monroe's final match at the St. Johns River Viking Invitational. The Mustangs finish 5-0 over the weekend, having won 15-of-15 sets, pushing their winning streak to 17 while improving to 31-6 overall.
 
The Mustangs got off to a quick start with a 6-1 lead over the Lake Hawks in the opening set, but things turned around quickly when the Lake Hawks took an 8-7 edge. Lake Sumter went up, 16-12, before the Mustangs stormed back with five straight points to jump ahead. Things were knotted up at 21-21 before the Mustangs caught fire and scored the final four points to claim a hard-fought 25-21 win.
 
The Mustangs managed to take an early 10-5 lead on the Lake Hawks in the second set, but Lake Sumter picked up the next three to keep it close. The Mustangs blew it open with four straight points later on to go up, 21-13, with another four-point run closing it out for a 25-15 win to go up, 2-0, in the match.
 
The Lake Hawks grabbed a 6-4 lead in the third frame before the Mustangs rattled off seven straight points to go up, 11-6. Lake Sumter went back up later in the set, 17-16 but the Mustangs strung together another six consecutive points to make it a 22-17 score. The Lake Hawks managed to take one more point before the Mustangs earned the final three points to win the match with a 25-18 third-set victory.
 
Yaliancis Flores registered her 10th double-double of the season in the win, totaling 15 kills and 11 digs. Vanja Stefanovic threw down 12 kills and picked up six digs in the match. Leanisse Solano was next with nine kills and eight digs, leading the team with two blocks as well. Francesca Andreon dished out 37 assists to go with nine digs and two kills. Laura Paniagua led the team with 19 digs while also handing out six assists.
 
Sunday's win wrapped up the regular season for the Mustangs. Their next match will take place on Saturday, Oct. 29, when they host Harford Community College at the Monroe Athletic Complex for the Region 15/20 Championship match. That match will begin at 5 p.m., and will be preceded with a Sophomore Night ceremony, celebrating the Mustangs' six sophomores.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 11 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
