Monroe Mustangs Women’s Volleyball Win Streak Reaches 13 with Three-Set Win at St. Joseph’s (L.I.)

PATCHOGUE, N.Y., September 27, 2021 – The Monroe College Mustangs women's volleyball team impressively ran its winning streak to 13 matches on Monday after defeating St. Joseph's College – L.I. in three sets. The Mustangs improve to 19-3 overall with the win.
 
After the opening set got off to an even 5-5 start, the Mustangs scored six straight points to take an 11-5 edge. Later in the set, another six-point run for Monroe pushed its lead to 21-9. A four-point run by the Golden Eagles late in the set made it 23-15, but Monroe claimed the final two points to win, 25-15, go to up, 1-0, on the night.
 
The home team took a 4-2 lead to start the second stanza, but Monroe took 9-of-11 to go ahead, 11-6. After taking another 5-of-6, Monroe held a 16-9 advantage, but St. Joseph's scored the next four to get within three. Five straight by Monroe shortly after put the Mustangs ahead, 23-15, and after one more Golden Eagles point, the Mustangs closed it out with the final two for a 25-16 victory and a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
The Mustangs did their best to end things quickly in the third frame, jumping out to a commanding 11-2 lead. The momentum could not be stopped, as the Mustangs continued to pack points together. They finished things off with a 25-7 conquest to claim a 3-0 victory on the evening.
 
Leanisse Solano led the Mustangs with 13 kills and a .435 hitting percentage on the evening, adding seven digs to a strong night. Alisha Callender was a kill away from a triple-double, finishing with nine kills, 15 assists and 11 digs to go with three aces and two blocks. Lyanis Rios passed out 12 assists, served up a pair of aces and picked up six digs. Laura Paniagua led the team with 21 digs.
 
The Mustangs will carry their 13-match winning streak into a challenging trip down to Florida, where Monroe will play four matches between Wednesday and Saturday. The week begins for the Mustangs at Florida State College at Jacksonville on Wednesday, Sept. 29, with an 8 p.m. match in Jacksonville, Fla.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 39 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 18 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
